I’ve long said that the way in which many express Christianity is very much like a cult. The indoctrination. The intolerance. The manipulation and the condemnation for opposing worldviews. And the closed-mindedness. And of course, false doctrine. And then the not-so-subtle desire to push this worldview on others by any means necessary, often betraying the very things that makes Christianity Christianity.
But then I see within the liberal, secular movement (not ALL of the people I know in the secular movement and not all of the people I know in the Church, thank goodness..) almost the same thing but dressed differently. The way it is expressed has become a false religion. The indoctrination. The intolerance. The manipulation and the condemnation for opposing worldviews. The closed-mindedness. The false doctrine. The often violent and immoral push for others to accept the worldview whether they like it or not under the guise of something reasonable, rational — betraying the very principles of the humanist, rational movement (birthed probably in large part from the hypocrisy of the above).
Everybody wants to belong. When people have been rejected their entire lives and finally find somewhere to belong, it can be near impossible to dislodge them from their new messiah. I’ve been wondering why some people that I know who were once very reasonable and loving seem to have turned nasty and defensive all of a sudden, completely unwilling to listen to anything that doesn’t match their newly held, and often shallow, views. And then I realize.. they must’ve drank some of that kool-aid. To be fair, I’ve been there before myself..
